why USE BOTOX FOR PERIORAL LIP LINES (Smoker’s Lines)
And why does a tiny protein have such a big impact on your appearance?
"Smoker’s lines" are vertical wrinkles that appear around the mouth. Even people who have never smoked develop them due to genetics, sun exposure, and repetitive pursing motions. Botox is a standard, FDA-approved treatment can help soften these lines by reducing excessive contraction of the orbicularis oris muscle.

How Botox Helps Around the Mouth
The circular orbicularis oris muscle wraps around the lips. When it contracts repeatedly, the skin folds into delicate vertical lines. Botox calms this overactivity, reducing the appearance of these wrinkles without affecting speech or function when dosed conservatively.
Ideal Candidates
Botox around the mouth works well for early or moderate vertical lip lines and those seeking subtle smoothing rather than volume.
Safety and Side Effects
Common temporary effects include mild swelling, pinpoint redness, or slight tenderness. Less common effects, such as eyebrow asymmetry, can occur if muscles respond unevenly, which is why injector experience is crucial. Neuromodulators like Botox have a well-established safety profile supported by decades of clinical use.

Benefits of Neck Botox
Softened Vertical Lip Wrinkles
Botox smooths the small creases that make lipstick feather or migrate.
More Defined Lip Border
Relaxing overactive perioral muscles can enhance the natural lip contour.
Subtle Appearance
The goal is not to immobilize the mouth but to reduce the repetitive pursing that deepens lines.
Complementary Treatments
Treating vertical lip lines (often called "barcode lines") is one of the most delicate tasks in aesthetic medicine, because they are usually caused by muscle movement and volume loss.
Botox is fantastic at pressing the "pause" button on the pursing motion that creates the lines, but it cannot always repair the creases that are already etched into the skin. To truly wipe the slate clean, we need to rebuild the area structure and surface.
Resurfacing the Canvas
If the lines are etched into the skin texture itself (like a scar), injectables alone aren't enough. We also need to polish the surface.
- Chemical Peels: For those stubborn, fine lines that look like cracks in the skin, a series of Chemical Peels is essential. By exfoliating the damaged top layers, we stimulate fresh collagen growth that "thickens" the skin, making it more resistant to wrinkling in the future.
- HydraFacial: Dehydrated lips look older. A HydraFacial (especially with a lip-perking booster) saturates the area with antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, immediately plumping the fine lines that appear when the skin is dry and thirsty.
Clear & Even Tone
- IPL Photofacial: The upper lip is a prime spot for "sun mustaches"—pigmentation caused by years of UV exposure or hormonal changes (melasma). A smooth lip line looks infinitely younger when the skin tone is uniform. IPL targets and shatters this pigment, leaving the area bright and clear.
- Laser Hair Removal: Nothing highlights lip texture issues like unwanted fuzz or shadow. Laser hair removal clears the area, ensuring that light reflects smoothly off your rejuvenated skin.
Internal Collagen Support
- Vitamin C & Glutathione IVs: The skin around the mouth breaks down quickly because of constant movement. High-dose Vitamin C and Glutathione delivered intravenously provide the raw materials your body needs to synthesize new collagen, supporting the repair process from the inside out.

Our Smoker’s lines BOTOX FAQ
What is the average cost of Botox in CT?
While typical Botox prices in the South Windsor area range from $12-$20 per unit, at IV Lounge CT it costs only $10 a unit. For an exact quote based on your personal goals, schedule a consultation at our South Windsor office today.
I don't smoke. Why do I have "Smoker's Lines"?
It is an unfair name! While smoking is a major cause, these lines are actually caused by the orbicularis oris muscle—the muscle you use to purse your lips. If you frequently drink through straws, whistle, take selfies with a "kissy face," or simply have a very expressive way of speaking, you are prone to these lines. It’s repetitive motion, not just nicotine, that breaks down the skin.
Will Botox make it hard for me to drink from a straw or speak?
This is the most critical question from our patients at South Windsor, CT. The mouth is a functional area, so we treat it conservatively. We use "micro-doses" of Botox here—just enough to soften the tension without paralyzing the muscle. You will still be able to eat, speak, and use a straw, though you might feel a slight difference in how firmly you can purse your lips for the first week.
Can Botox erase deep perioral lip lines on its own?
Rarely. If the lines are visible only when you purse your lips (dynamic lines), Botox can erase them. If the lines are visible when your face is totally relaxed (static lines), Botox will stop them from getting worse, but you will likely need Dermal Fillers or a Chemical Peel here at IV Lounge CT to physically smooth the etched skin.
How long does the botox result last around the mouth?
Because the mouth is the most mobile part of the face (we use it to eat, talk, and express constantly), Botox metabolizes faster here than in the forehead. Results typically last about 6 to 8 weeks. However, since the dosage is so small (often just 4–6 units), it is an easy and affordable add-on to maintain during your regular visits at our medspa in CT.
How many units do I need for the perioral lines?
Because the mouth is a high-function area, we use a "micro-dose" technique. The goal is to soften the lines without affecting your speech or ability to eat. Most patients require only 4 to 6 units total for the upper lip. Because the dosage is so low, this is one of the most affordable add-ons to your regular treatment plan, yet it makes a profound difference in the smoothness of your lipstick application and overall smile.
What is the aftercare needed after receiving Botox injections
Use Anti-inflammatories: Using anti-inflammatories after your botox injection procedure for about 2 weeks will help with potential bruising.
Avoid laying down: Try not to lay down on your forehead for about 3 to 4 hours after your treatment.
Avoid Scrubbing or Rubbing your face: Wait about 24 to 48 hours before you decide to rub and scrub your face. This is to ensure positive results after your botox treatment.
Don’t wear makeup for 12 hours: Post injection waits at least 12 hours before you apply makeup to avoid irritation.
Will this treat the "downward turn" at the corners of my mouth?
Smoker's lines are the vertical lines above the lip. The downward turn at the corners is caused by a different muscle (the DAO).
