why USE BOTOX FOR  lower perioral rhytids

And why does a tiny protein have such a big impact on your appearance?

Botox for lower lip lines targets the vertical wrinkles and excessive muscular tension that form along the inferior perioral region. These lines often deepen with habitual movements, age-related collagen loss, and hyperactivity of the depressor muscles around the mouth. Treating this area with botox, which is FDA-approved, helps smooth the lower lip surface, softens expression-related creasing, and enhances lower-face harmony.

How Botox treatment Helps with Lower Lip Lines

The lower perioral area is influenced mainly by the depressor labii inferioris and depressor anguli oris muscles. When these muscles become overactive, they contribute to:

  • Vertical creases on the lower lip
  • Downward pull at the mouth corners
  • Excess tension affecting the chin–lip transition
  • Worsening of etched-in perioral wrinkles

Botox decreases acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, reducing excessive contraction. As the muscles relax, the lower lip surface becomes smoother, and the perioral skin appears less etched.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidate for bunny lines treatment is an adult who notices distinct diagonal or horizontal wrinkles forming on the bridge of the nose during facial expressions such as smiling, laughing, or "scrunching" the nose.

  • High Nasalis Activity ("The Scrunch"): Candidates often have a dominant transverse nasalis muscle. When they smile or laugh, their nose contracts significantly. If this movement creates visible crinkling that bothers you, you are likely a good candidate.
  • Preventative Goals: Individuals who are starting to see faint lines lingering on the nose even after the face relaxes. Treating these "dynamic" lines early prevents them from becoming deep, permanent "static" wrinkles that are harder to treat later.
  • Upper Face Balance (Adjunct Treatment): Patients who already receive Botox for frown lines (glabella) or crow's feet are often excellent candidates. When surrounding muscles are relaxed by Botox, the nasal muscles may sometimes overcompensate (recruit), creating new bunny lines. Treating the nose maintains a natural harmony across the upper face.
  • Good Skin Elasticity: Candidates with healthy skin elasticity typically achieve the best results, as the skin can smooth out effectively once the underlying muscle tension is released.

Safety and Side Effects

Common temporary effects include mild swelling, pinpoint redness, or slight tenderness. Less common effects, such as eyebrow asymmetry, can occur if muscles respond unevenly, which is why injector experience is crucial. Neuromodulators like Botox have a well-established safety profile supported by decades of clinical use.

Benefits of lower lip lines Botox

Smoother Lower Lip Texture

Neuromodulator treatment reduces muscle-driven creases, leading to softer, more even lower lip lines. Clinical literature supports botulinum toxin as an effective option for dynamic perioral rhytids.

Improved Lower-Face Balance

By lowering excessive downward pull from perioral depressor muscles, Botox helps maintain a more neutral lip position and improves overall mouth symmetry.

Reduced Muscular Tension

Chronic contraction in the lower lip region can deepen vertical lines and contribute to a fatigued expression. Relaxing these muscles minimizes strain and helps prevent progression of etched wrinkles.

Subtle, Natural Refinement

The goal is to soften movement—not to restrict normal expression. When dosed conservatively, Botox provides a natural improvement in lip-line texture without altering lip shape.

Complementary Treatments

Lower lip lines are stubborn. Unlike the upper lip, which wrinkles mostly from pursing, the lower lip lines are often etched in by a combination of muscle movement, gravity, and sun damage.

Botox relaxes the tension, but to truly smooth out these vertical creases, we must treat the skin quality itself. Here is how we build a comprehensive plan for the lower face:

Resurfacing the "Static" Lines

Botox stops the movement, but it cannot erase the lines that are already "ironed" into the skin.

  • Chemical Peels: This is the most effective partner for lower lip lines. Because the skin on the chin and lower lip is relatively thick, it responds beautifully to exfoliation. A series of Chemical Peels removes the weathered top layer of skin, softening the depth of those vertical grooves and stimulating fresh collagen to fill them in from the bottom up.
  • HydraFacial: Dryness makes every wrinkle look twice as deep. A HydraFacial cleanses the pores on the chin (a common problem area) and infuses the lower face with intense hydration. This "plumps" the skin instantly, making the lines appear finer and softer.

The Chin Connection (Mentalis Treatment)

You cannot treat the lower lip without looking at the chin.

  • Chin Botox (Mentalis): Lower lip lines often worsen because the chin muscle (mentalis) pushes upward, bunching the skin. By treating the chin alongside the lip lines, we drop the tension in the entire lower face. This relaxes the "puckered" look and allows the lower lip to sit smoothly against a relaxed chin.

Clearing the Canvas

  • IPL Photofacial: The lower face takes a beating from the sun. If your wrinkles are surrounded by redness or brown spots, they look deeper than they actually are. IPL clears this discoloration, creating a uniform, creamy skin tone that reflects light and hides imperfections.
  • Spider Vein Removal: It is very common to have tiny broken capillaries around the corners of the mouth and chin. clearing these red distractions with a quick laser session makes the entire mouth area look younger and cleaner.

The Clean Profile

Laser Hair Removal: Stray hairs on the chin or lower lip catch the light and cast shadows, drawing attention to texture issues. Laser Hair Removal ensures the area is pristine, so the focus remains on your smile, not the fuzz or the lines.

Our lower lip lines BOTOX FAQ

  • What is the average cost of Botox in CT?

While typical Botox prices in the South Windsor area range from $12-$20 per unit, at IV Lounge CT it costs only $10 a unit. For an exact quote based on your personal goals, schedule a consultation at our South Windsor office today.

  • What causes vertical lines on the lower lip?

It is a combination of factors. Repetitive movement (talking, chewing, sipping) plays a role, but gravity and volume loss in the chin also contribute. As we age, the support under the mouth diminishes, causing the skin to "collapse" inward, forming these vertical accordion lines.

  • Will Botox make it hard to eat or speak?

This is a high-function area, so we treat it with extreme precision. We use "micro-doses" of Botox—tiny amounts placed very superficially. This softens the wrinkles without affecting the muscle power needed to chew or enunciate. You might feel a slight difference when rinsing your mouth with water for the first week, but normal function remains intact.

  • Can Botox remove lower lip lines completely?

If the lines are there only when you talk (dynamic), Botox can smooth them significantly. However, lower lip lines are often static (present even when you are silent). In these cases, Botox will soften them and prevent them from getting deeper, but you will need to pair the treatment with Chemical Peels or skin resurfacing to truly smooth the skin texture.

  • How many botox units are needed to treat lower lip lines?

Less is more here. We typically use just 2 to 4 units total for the lower lip line area. It is a quick, affordable, and subtle adjustment that refines the mouth area without freezing it.

  • Does botox for lower lip lines hurt?

The skin on the nose is thin, so you might feel a quick, sharp pinch, but it is one of the fastest areas to treat—usually taking less than 5 seconds. We can apply numbing cream if you are sensitive, but most patients at CT find it very tolerable.

  • Does lower lip lines botox treat the "Marionette Lines" (lines running from mouth to chin)?

No, this treatment is specifically for the vertical wrinkles on the lip itself. Marionette lines (the long folds running down to the jaw) are caused by cheek sagging and gravity. Those are best treated with other modalities—ask during your consultation at South Windsor about the best approach for lifting the corners of the mouth.

  • Is botox for lower lip lines painful?

The area around the mouth is sensitive, but because we use such a small amount of product and ultra-fine needles, the procedure is over in seconds. Most patients describe it as a quick "sting." At our CT medspa we can also apply a numbing agent to ensure you are comfortable.
